Air Fryer Grilled Cheese

Air Fryer Grilled Cheese has to be one of the best air fryer recipes! It’s actually easier and less time-consuming than a traditional grilled cheese sandwich made in a skillet. It also fries up so nice and crispy on the outside and chewy and gooey on the inside! My kind of grilled cheese sandwich!

My two favorite tomato soup recipes to serve with these would be my Easy Tomato Soup or my Tomato Eggplant soup. You can also do a version of this grilled cheese sandwich by following my Parmesean Encrusted Grilled Cheese recipe too and just popping it in the air fryer!

For most of my air fryer recipes, I use the Philips HD9630 Air Fryer. It’s larger than most air fryers and I also love the white color and the design. It also doesn’t become an eyesore while sitting on your countertop.

STEP#1: Use the Right Bread

I find the best bread to use for an air fryer grilled cheese is white sandwich bread. My favorite isTrader Joe’s Sourdough Sandwich Bread. It works beautifully!

Butter the outside of each bread slice with melted butter. Don’t skimp on this part! It’s what adds the flavor and contributes to its crispiness!

STEP#2: Add 3 Slices of Cheese

My feeling is if you are going to have a grilled cheese, have grilled cheese! Ha! For this, I like to use 3 slices of cheese for ultimate flavor and gooiness.

My favorite combination is Cheddar Cheese, Swiss Cheese, and Mozzarella. But really you could any combination of cheese you like or use all the same kind too. The secret is just to use 3 slices. This will get you the best gooiness! You could also add a few additional fillings as well!

Additional Filling Ideas for Air Fryer Grilled Cheese

  • Spread pesto on the inside of the bread and use only mozzarella cheese
  • Add some cooked bacon and cheddar cheese
  • Add some fresh spinach and use Swiss Cheese

How Long To Cook a Grilled Cheese in an Air Fryer?

Personally, I think 10 minutes is perfect at 350F (175C) otherwise if you go longer the bread can get too hard and dry.

I also find it’s best to only air fry one sandwich at a time, to allow the air to circulate well around the sandwich. But if you are making more than 1 sandwich at a time, then place the cooked sandwiches on a baking sheet and pop them in the oven at 250F (125C) to keep warm.

STEP#3: Warm Up Tomato Soup

One of the things that I love about air fryer recipes is the fact that they are “hands-free cooking” at their best. As a busy Mom, this is a HUGE plus for me. So I can be heating up the tomato soup that I meal prepped over the weekend while the grilled cheese sandwiches are frying away in my air fryer.

That way my soup is all ready to go as soon as my sandwiches are ready.

STEP#4: Slice and Serve

You’ll see when you open up that little drawer to your air fryer how beautifully toasted your grilled cheese sandwich is, and the cheese underneath is all melted and gooey!

I like to slice my grilled cheese sandwiches on the diagonal because you’ll find they are easier for dipping that way!

And what’s a grilled cheese sandwich without a little tomato soup to dip it into? I hope this becomes one of your new favorite air fryer recipes, it certainly is at our house!
